Horstman's second book is about current research and theories on the brain. Past, present and future, 'written in a layman's term. The book is exiting and easy to understand. It's well written, entertaining and very interesting. I was extremely thrilled with chapter 8 "The Possible Dreams: stem cells, gene therapy, and nanotechnology". For those who love to look inside the brain, a few full-color interesting pictures of the brain are in the middle of the book. My brain took a spin while I was reading the book which by the way didn't take a long time! Can we enhance our brain capacity? What is the digital explosion doing to your brain? Is there a cure for Alzheimer disease?

I recently finished on a class on biology of the brain so I was excited to read this book. It is easy to read and understand and gives you the information without all the research methods which can be boring. On the other hand it was less detailed than I was hoping. I really wanted to expand my knowledge but most of it I had read or heard about in my class already. I suppose that is why text books cost so much more than books such as these, in the text books you get LOTS of detailed information. This was like a readers digest version meant for someone who is interested but hasn't necessarily taken any advanced biology.

As a reader of Judith Horstman's last book The Scientific American Day in the Life of the Brain, I was intrigued when I read her latest. She probes the current research on our brains in terms a layman can understand and spells out a future for us that is both exciting and terrifying. Cell phones implanted in our brain? A cure for diseases like Alzheimer's using microscopic computer chips in the brain? The effect of habitual Internet use on one's brain? London taxi drivers with bigger brains that help them remember the maze of streets there? And more frightening, will others soon be able to read our minds? You'll get a real sense of the past, present and future thinking about our brains. And the author sent me to Netflix to see old SciFi films that predicted the future that is now real.
I hope Ms. Horstman will write more in this series. There is so much to know.

As one of the research assistants for this book, I've loved seeing how expertly Judith Horstman shaped a mass of information into a clear, comprehensible, and really enjoyable book. It's amazing to see how materials that I found fascinating the first time around are so enjoyable to read here, as they're retold in a lucid and engaging style. For anyone who's interested in how cutting-edge science impacts our daily lives, how our brains work behind the scenes, or what we can do to preserve and enhance our brain's capacity, this is essential reading. You won't just learn about science and yourself, you'll be entertained and amazed.

Greetings All: I just wanted to formally note that the Brave New Brain is a fantastic read. It's extremely well-written, timely and the topics Horstman covers are thrilling-from the impact of the digital explosion on our brains to a concept called neuroethics, which was a fascinating chapter about stem cell research, doping, and privacy and the brain.
A quick and interesting read, this book also has a bonus in the center: a full-color multipage insert full of interesting illustrations and diagrams about the more complex processes in the book. If you have any interest in the brain and want details of the impact of this new frenetic and digital age we're living in-featuring the iBrain!-check out this book to become illuminated and informed. Bravo!
