I used this plugged in to my eeepc and a Behringer Euro-rack 4 channel to record the dialog for a movie my friends are shooting in HD on a digital SLR. The thing is so little hassle it scares me. The computer detects it instantly and Audacity automatically sets itself up to use it as the input. The noise floor is very low; if you're using a condenser shotgun mic, I assure the microphone and the mixer you plug it in to will both create a higher noise floor than this interface, so it's really not an issue. The monitoring function is fantastic. I assure you that you won't notice the difference between 16 and 24 bit if you're just recording movie sound. What you will notice is how you just got away with using the table top mixer and laptop you already own to save yourself from spending [...] bucks on an SD recorder. That's pretty sweet.
If you need XLR inputs, hook it to an external mixer. For some reason it's hard to find battery powered mic preamps. That's silly. I'll get to work building one and post the schematic on [...]
Taking the cover off, I see that the Behringer uses a high quality, easily obtainable Burr-Brown chipset developed by Texas Instruments. So if it makes you feel fancier, you could scratch off "Behringer" and write "Texas Instruments" since the majority of the functionality was developed by TI. That's what makes it so cheap: TI develops a single chip solution (about 5 dollars from DigiKey), Behringer draws a PCB and adds some passive components, connectors, and a pretty box and that's that. There's probably less than ten dollars worth of parts in this thing. You're still getting a good deal; it's worth 20 dollars to have someone put this together for you. Don't be fooled into buying a more expensive interface, it'll just have more useless garbage piled into it and require proprietary crapware to run.
Buy this interface, it rocks!

i use the Behringer UCA202 U-Control Audio Interface with Audacity to record my mixes from a Pioneer DJM 400 mixer to my laptop PC (Vista) and it does a great job of recording good quality audio. A plug and play device, no need for any software installation. Im really happy about this product, Highly recommended.

I own two of these Behringer boxes (they come in two modals) and use them with Sonor/cakewalk and an internal software sound modual (Roland Virtual sound Canvas) to play back midi files with my live two piece band. The sound through the PA (Soundcraft mixer and Mackie active speakers) is loud and very clear, in most cases, no eq needed. I guess it really revolves around your personal needs. For live performance these Behringer boxes are excellent and the price is a steal. I do not use it to record as my home recording is done on a stand alone DAW (Tascam 2488 24 track).
If you are a live musician or a DJ using something like Virtual DJ these boxes are a great way to eliminate low level hum from a laptop and give you a dramtically better sound than most internal laptop sound cards.

Since my MacBook Pro is with me every Saturday and two Sundays a month to project hymn lyrics on our twin LCD projectors at church, it only made sense to record the choir on the MacBook as well. Our Behringer XENYX mixer came with the UCA200 USB interface and since it's the church's property, I needed a USB interface of my own. The UCA202 is a perfect step up.
By hooking the signal from the mixer's 1-2 subgroup to the UCA202, I get a clean recording that I can further tweak with Audacity (available from audacity . sourceforge . net). Subgroup 3-4, with a little cathedral reverb from the mixer, goes off to the church's sound system. The UCA202 does the heavy lifting, freeing up precious CPU cycles. Audacity never misses a note and Microsoft PowerPoint never freezes or stutters.
At home, we use the UCA202 to transfer vinyl into the digital realm. And if we're feeling patient, we can isolate and eliminate clicks and pops.
Oh, the things we can do with modern technology. Simply audacious!

If you have Vista you have to download another capture program to make this thing work. It was nice to be able to listen to what you were recording by plugging earphones into it. It does an excellent job transferring from a playing device to the computer via USB
